Understanding your care

What is a medical abortion?

A medical abortion, often called the abortion pill, uses two prescription medications that work together to end a pregnancy. In Canada, these medications are mifepristone and misoprostol.

A health care provider will review your health and pregnancy information before recommending care. Depending on your situation, that assessment may include bloodwork, an ultrasound or other steps.

Your care plan is personal.

The right next step depends on your health, pregnancy timing and individual circumstances. Call the clinic for guidance specific to you.

How the medication process works

The two-step medication process.

Your care team will review the instructions with you and answer your questions before treatment begins.

Step 1: Day 1

Mifepristone at the clinic

At your first appointment, the doctor and nurse review your medical history and complete the clinic assessment, including a physical examination, blood draw and ultrasound.

You take one mifepristone tablet at the clinic as directed by your doctor.

Step 2: Day 2

Misoprostol in a comfortable setting

Between 24 and 48 hours after Step 1, you take four misoprostol tablets together. Hold the tablets between your cheek and gum for 30 minutes, then swallow any remaining medication with water.

Plan to be somewhere comfortable where you can rest. The clinic also recommends having a support person with you at that time.

What to expect after misoprostol

Bleeding, cramping, blood clots and some pregnancy tissue are expected. This most often begins within four hours, but it may start anywhere from 30 minutes to 48 hours after taking misoprostol. The clinic recommends resting for three hours after taking the tablets.

Follow-up care

Your second appointment confirms completion.

Clients are scheduled for two appointments. The clinic arranges your follow-up appointment on the day of your initial visit.

Why the follow-up is important

Your second appointment allows the doctor to confirm that the medical abortion was completed successfully. Keep this appointment even if you are feeling well, and contact the clinic if you have questions before your follow-up.
