About IUDs

Copper and hormonal IUDs.

Both types offer long-term pregnancy prevention, and fertility returns after the IUD is removed.

Copper IUD

  • Provides long-term pregnancy prevention for five years.
  • Contains no hormones.
  • The strings can be checked periodically to confirm it is in place.
  • Fertility returns after removal.
  • Can be a cost-effective option.
  • Can be used as emergency contraception when inserted within five days of unprotected sex.

Hormonal IUD

  • Provides long-term pregnancy prevention for up to five years.
  • May make bleeding cycles shorter, lighter or stop completely.
  • The strings can be checked periodically to confirm it is in place.
  • Fertility returns after removal.
  • May be covered by OHIP up to age 25 and by many private insurance plans.
